Remote Music Library
  • Hi - May anyone guide me how to access my remote music library? All my music is sitting on my home server which i usally access by gigolo via gvfs.
  • This is a post by NothingSpecial from the old guayadeque support thread

    NothingSpecial:
When I listen on my laptop I use sshfs.
    sudo apt-get install sshfs

Your going to have to tweak this to your personal set up. My laptop`s music directory is empty so I just use that.
    sshfs -o idmap=user username@ip_address:/path/to/music

Guayadeque plays the music files fine.
  • Hi - Thx. for your quick reply. Understood - Looks like a major undertaking - the home server actually is a "Windows Home Server" ... no SSH out of the box.
  • Im not sure but I think securecrt may allow you to do it
  • @tonyoptical

ever thought about changing the box to a linux based media server?
  • @anonbeat - OK - I'll check and report back about securecrt ..
@bigthinker - Sorry - This machine's main purpose,, beside storing music and tv recordings for an XBOX360, is for convenient & automatic backup's of my daughters XP machines ...
  • @anonbeat - Just checked securecrt - no option as well - this is a commercial product - for my budget just not affordable - really expensive server licence required - need to think about moving my huge music collection to a different place ...
  • @anonbeat - Great - I'll give it a try. In the meantime i have found copssh. Hopefully one of these 2 will do the job - i'll report back here.
  • copssh - no success. The openssh service starts and stops immediately on my Windows Home Server .... left a post in their forums. We'll see.
  • @tonyoptical Can you access it the server at all from your linux box?
    If not install samba
sudo apt-get install sambaedit the /etc/samba/smb.conf (as root)
sudo gedit /etc/samba/smb.confand in "workgroup = WORKGROUP" put the workgroup of your windows machine (which by default is WORKGROUP).

    Restart samba
sudo smbd restartand you should be able to see your windows machine from Network. Of course you have to share your library from within Windows.

There is a graphical explanation of how to share a folder from Ubuntu to Windows, which is quite similar, here: http://www.n00bsonubuntu.net/content/install-samba-and-share-folders-ubuntu-1010-maverick-meerkat

Once you can access your remote library, to import it in guayadeque, first mount it by just accessing it. Then in the import library window do a Ctrl-H to see the hidden folders and go into .gvfs. There you should see a directory representing your remote folder.
  • @tamalet - thx. for your advise. As written in my initial post i was already capable of accessing the windows box from my crunchbang laptop by means of gigolo and gvfs. What i wasn't able to realize was the fact that Crtl-H makes the hidden folders visible to import the music into guayadeque. What a pretty simple and straightforward solution. Thank you so much! Sometimes you just can't see the wood because of all the trees ....
  • Please note :
As its a remote library and scanning will take some time, dont check the update library on start in preferences -> library in case the library is not accesible when you start guayadeque.
  • @tamalet - Sorry to advise that the suggested way is actually NOT working. Scanning my > 20.000 song library fails. gvfs is loosing the connection. I believe this is NOT related to guayadeque but gvfs's fault. So i may still pursue the ssh way. Maybe it's actually NOT a good idea to have huge amounts of data on a windows server and trying to work with them from linux. I just can't put 100GB of music locally onto my laptop .... additionally i need to share this pool with the rest of my family and other streaming clients in our house.
@anonbeat - Yes - that's well understood. I have read here already in a separate post to uncheck this option.
  • I access my 17.350 library remotely and it works (mostly) fine. Sometimes the connection drops but that is after not using it for a while.
  • @tamalet - I see - actually i am "bleeding edge" already.... On my laptop i am running debian squeeze/sid which shall have the latest stuff - but that's maybe part of the problem. Maybe even "gigolo" the graphical frontend is responsible for the connection dropping. Scanning the library is in two steps. The first step is running smoothly - all tracks are getting read - but that second step kills the connection. Actually i do not know what guayadeque is doing/updating in that second step whilst scanning the remote library ....
  • The first step add the new tracks and the second one try to discover any track that have been removed.
